D1 - Analyse how post-production techniques and processes create meaning in the media product to meet the client brief.
The client brief that we were given asked us to create and produce a new music magazine that is based in North London. My choice of magazine was a Jazz magazine that has been given a modern twist so that middle aged people could enjoy reading our magazine and listening to modern jazz music. I chose this genre because I felt that there isn't much information and details about jazz music, when really there is a lot of jazz music out there in North London. The brief told us that there is a vibrant music scene. I made my magazine as vibrant as possible especially by creating a red colour scheme. The colour red is eye catching and very vibrant and works well with the jazz theme. Red is connoted with words like love, hate, passion, anger. The music genre jazz reminds me mainly of love and passion, so when looking at my magazine front cover people should feel love and passion towards jazz and the magazine.
The photo that is on my front cover was originally a plain brick wall with the band having a photoshoot in front of the brick wall. I chose to edit the picture by making some of the bricks in the wall colour so that it links in with the jazz theme and doesn't just look like a bland brick wall.
This was effective and also linked to the brief, because again it made the front cover look more vibrant and colourful. I learnt how to use photoshop and used loads of new skills of editing. For example when taking pictures of my band i decided that i would place them in a simple setting which was infant of a plain grey brick wall. I then used photoshop to edit the background and add coloured bricks to the wall. This was effective as it was bright and eye catching and looking at a plain grey brick wall was dull and bland. Also the fact the band were wearing all black contrasts with the bright colours of the magazines colour scheme.
When creating my masthead on my magazine front cover i decided to use difference effects on photo shop to make it bolder round the edges and make it look more effective and noticeable. I used effects such a drop glow, and shadow to make it more eye-catching and bold and it creates meaning as it emphasised the name of the magazine. I want it to be noticeable and bold because it is a new magazine so therefore should be extremely bright and noticeable. Creating this effects meets the target brief as it is a new and modern music magazine that will target people who are living in North London.
I have played my front cover out in this way so that every aspect on the magazine is noticeable and has a good view. All the texts are placed where they are as the magazine is based around the main image. People who read the magazine will immediately look at the main image which is why i decided to have them all wearing black which makes the rest of the magazine look brighter and eye catching. It also makes the people in the image look like a band and look like they are working together to create music. My main cover line is in the middle but slightly to the left of the magazine. I did this so that it is easily seen on top of the main image. I put the quote 'Talk music, love & legends" on top of a dark black box so that it is one of the most eye-catching pieces of text on the front cover. This line is effective and creates meaning because it makes our magazine seem interesting and seem like there is a lot of different information inside the magazine.
On my double page spread i used a black square at the top right of the page with lots of text on top. The text is describing and introducing 'The 3 notes'. It gives the reader an insight of who they are, where they are going to perform. This creates meaning because if a reader knows more information about the person they are reading about they will become more attached and want to keep reading about them. The 3 notes are the people who are advertising our magazine because they are the ones on the first issue and will therefore help to promote our magazine, especially at there own events and concerts.
On my magazine front cover the words 'Exclusive interview' are in bright white bold writing with a glow around the edges, so that it is bright and easily seen. I put the text on top of a red slanted box with a thick black outline. It is place on the left under neath the masthead and is placed on the brick wall. I placed it here so that it is at the top of the magazine and is one of the first things that is noticed by the readers. The bright red box with black outline matches the rest of the colour scheme and also is a bold statement to the magazine. The words 'exclusive interview' create meaning because it will make the readers want to look inside the magazine and also want to get to know the band better.
All of the text down the side of my front cover is in thin white writing placed on the top half of one the band members. I placed them here so that they are easily noticed and read. I made the text bright white so that they are very easily seen on the black background, which is the hoody. Each individual bit of text states things that are written about inside the magazine. This created meaning and will make the readers want to read more and look inside of the magazine and read the full articles. It meets to the target brief because it is an in depth music magazine that suits to the people that are living in North London.
